Posca x Cody Tarantino

In 2024, Uni-ball invited artist Cody Tarantino to star in a commercial for their Posca marker line. The campaign was filmed in Mexico City, in a remarkable location: the former home of a legendary Mexican muralist, Diego Rivera. Diego Rivera, a towering figure in 20th-century art, helped pioneer the Mexican muralism movement, using public walls as canvases to tell powerful stories of labor, resistance, and national identity. His influence extended far beyond Mexico, shaping the direction of modern art around the world. For Tarantino, Rivera’s work (especially The Detroit Industry Murals in the Detroit Institute of Arts) left a lasting impression. Encountering these murals in Detroit sparked a deep respect for Rivera’s commitment to art as both craft and social commentary. The commercial shoot paid subtle tribute to that legacy. One of Rivera’s former home studios was reimagined as a Cody Tarantino-inspired creative space, blending contemporary aesthetics with historical echoes. It was a meeting of eras: Rivera’s revolutionary spirit intersecting with Tarantino’s modern, multidisciplinary vision. Nearly 100 creatives and crew members came together to produce the campaign. The final commercial, rich with color and symbolism, continues to air on Bloomberg and across major U.S. television networks, marking one of Uni-ball’s most ambitious and culturally resonant projects to date.

WHAT IS SINTHETIC?

Sinthetic is a brand that delves into the intricate relationship between humanity, nature, and the artificial environments we create. The name itself (a twist on synthetic) reflects the idea that art is often a human-made echo of the natural world. But it also hints at sin, acknowledging our instinct to indulge in what’s seen as superficial, excessive, or self-serving. At Sinthetic, we embrace this tension. We recognize that the line between real and artificial is often unclear. We invite you to consider the act of creation and consumption: Are our expressions simply reflections of the world around us, or do they reveal something uniquely human? Is fashion a surface-level pursuit, or a deeper form of self-expression? Sinthetic celebrates the beauty of the artificial while honoring its roots in the natural. It’s about the pleasure and the guilt, the authenticity in imitation, and the search for meaning in a world shaped by both nature and design. In the end, even the most 'synthetic' creations can carry real weight, and there’s value in embracing the complexity of our human-made world.

WORKING WITH OTHER ARTISTS

For Cody, collaboration is a creative catalyst. It keeps his work evolving, forces him out of his comfort zone, and deepens the connection between creator and community. Cody shows an openness to other visions, and a curiosity about where they might intersect. But more than anything, he values the relationships. The chance to connect, share, and build something meaningful with people who are just as obsessed with the process as he is. In a world that often romanticizes isolation, Cody’s path is a reminder that creativity expands when it's shared. He’s not just open to collaboration, he’s energized by it. Cody frequently collaborates with editors, filmmakers, animators, musicians, and other visual artists.
